The Vincent Bonneville Bike
Steve Hamel has been working on a Vincent to take to race at Bonneville. Rollie Free did it at 50, and so will Steve. After 2 years of intense research and labor, Steve has produced a bike which will surely break the record set in its class now held by a vintage Vincent racer dragged out of mothballs and raced on the flats a few years ago. Steve expects to be running 7000 to 7500 rpm and perhaps 150 mph or more. The bike is geared for around 160. The engine is hand built by Steve using many repro parts imported from Australia (he is the Distributor in the USA). The valves, combustion chamber and intake have all been developed using a flow bench over many months and countless revisions. Most everything needed to either be custom made or modified. The bike made its debut recently at Steve's shop in FrogTown and ran loudly up and down the alley to the terror and delight of the crowd. Steve and Wendy expect to be racing the bike at the next SpeedWeek ( Bonneville Salt Flats 100 miles west of Salt Lake City in August 2004).
